A shopper's dream

It's two weeks to the exams and the projects just don't STOP. It's almost like some scary dream where you're stuck in a bottomless pit. But amidst all this, the only reason why I'm still sane is the recent discovery of online shopping on livejournal. Thanks to my die-hard friends, we now surf the only website that keeps us in touch with the real world out there during lectures and tutorials. And it's thrilling to watch packages arrive right at your doorstep, and the anticipation of opening them! :)

The other reason why this online shopping thing appeals is because of the sore and evident lack of American clothing stores here. Those that bring the American brands in - not counting global ones such as Guess? and Forever 21 - are usually small niche shops, and sometimes their authenticity isn't very credible. So when you're online shopping and an Abercrombie & Fitch skirt or a Hollister top graces the webpage, an inevitable sudden surge of joy overcomes you, and even in one of the most remote parts of Singapore where my university is, you feel like you're suddenly standing right in the middle of the Mall of America.

Okay. I know I'm exaggerating and everybody is rolling their eyes.

BUT. It's kind of true. I know my die-hard friends will agree. So while I was supposed to be writing my report, I was actually surfing the pages of the Mall of America. And I was smiling to myself as all these brands that Singapore should most definitely import jumped out at me and I gazed with envy at the enticing store signs - Victoria's Secret, Sephora, Bloomingdale's, Macy's, Pottery Barn, American Eagle Outfitters, Gap, Abercrombie & Fitch, H&M, Steve Madden, Hollister, Wet Seal, Rave, Nordstrom, Aeropostale, Claire's...

I think my second ambition after being the editor-in-chief of a leading fashion magazine like Vogue or Cosmopolitan would be to be a budding entrepreneur who brings in all these brands for the good of all mankind.

Mirror soulmate

This week, I found my mirror soulmate. That happens when you happen to be in a crowded lift with no space to move and nothing to do as the lift moves slowly up to your desired level. That happens when there are absolutely no mirrors in the lift (who would invent a lift like that, you ask) except for one on the lift ceiling. That happens when you tilt your head to the ceiling mirror, hoping that nobody's looking at you trying to sneak a peek at yourself. That happens when you breathe a sigh of relief as you stare at yourself amongst the top of many dark-haired heads. That happens when your eyes dart towards the left and suddenly you don't see a dark-haired head anymore, but another pair of eyes staring right at you in the ceiling mirror. And then the both of you burst out laughing because you realise how silly and vain you both must look. But, she becomes a mirror soulmate for life. One that truly understands the need for mirrors.

This week, I relived my childhood when we landed ourselves in "Pretty in Tokyo". Cringing at the two girls who went before us, who were striking poses that almost made me gag, I'm sure other people must have felt the same way as they watched the three of us trying to figure out the machine that only spouts Japanese. Neoprints were once an every day part of my life - I remember Sharon and I taking a neoprint every day just to commemorate a new day in secondary school. Nonetheless, it was all girlish giggles (and some embarrassed laughter) as we posed for the many different shots with the time limit that appears out of nowhere after the background magically changes. It was really fun, and I'm sure a certain Kelly Green had the time of his life trying to hide his face amongst the young girls at "Pretty in Tokyo".

Not everyone would be so accomodating to the childish requests of two girls. :)

Overrated blogger

I do not read Xiaxue for a reason.

So when the roomie is lying on her bed with sleepy-lidded eyes and looking at me half-asleep, and her parting words are, "Go and read Xiaxue's latest post", while I sit at my desk preparing to start another avalanche of work, I look at her incredulously.

Then she dozes off to sleep.

So I enter the site that so many people talk about, and the first words that catch my eye at the top leaves me scrunching up my face in disgust and bursting out, "EVERYONE'S READING IT?! Can she GET any more egoistic?"

The roomie wakes up from my outburst and mumbles, "You really hate her huh..."

I leave her to her Manolo Blahnik pillowcase and carry on reading, a nagging annoyance growing inside me as I take in her less than perfect English and what seems more like a photo-blog displaying mostly shots of her face rather than her intellect. So her latest post speaks of her experience at the Yangtze cinema and men wanking there - thank you, very informative - it just seems to be an excuse for her to act like she's really liberal and use expletives. Plus, the deluge of photos? Hello, it's a blog, not Flickr.

And as I read on, I'm all ready to slap her by the time I come to this:

Digressing, HAVE YOU SEEN THE STANDARDS OF MAKE UP IN SINGAPORE? God, it is SO bad.I mean, most girls just put a bit of pressed powder, slap on an excuse of a light eyeshadow, apply transparent lip gloss, and call it a day, exhausted. The whole POINT of make up is to make you look prettier, not to bloody add colour to your face. Well ok, that's considered make up too...... for a clown. Unless you are already VERY pretty, there is no point in putting such "light" make up.

Well, I'm sorry I don't put on heavy makeup. But all I have to say is this, people who actually need tons of makeup are probably insecure about the way they look. To me, makeup should be subtle to enhance your features, and not look like the obvious icing on a cake. And it does not take an idiot to come to the conclusion that she thinks she's some makeup expert and the rest of the world is beneath her.

I know I'm never reading her blog again. I don't know why people do and I don't understand the hype behind it - it's really rather senseless.

While reading "Fashion Merchandising" for my 105 project, I found out the correct way to pronounce an important word that many people mispronounce. So here's a useful piece of information: Haute Couture - "Oat-koo-tur".

Jesus, take the wheel

And for the first time in a long time
She bowed her head to pray
She said I'm sorry for the way I've been living my life
I know I've got to change
So from now on tonight

Jesus take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this all my own
I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
To save me from this road I'm on
Jesus take the wheel

Tiramisu and sparkling white wine

My Glam Girls and sparkling white wine

Happy Birthday Nick

Tiramisu and sparkling white wine is my official favourite dessert. Especially tiramisu from "My Secret Garden", where Nick had his 21st birthday bash. It was simply delectable. Just the right amount of coffee and all that... I'm no tiramisu connoisseur but trust me, this one was amazing. Shuhui, Sharon, Julienne and I just glued ourselves to our seats and looked posh with the wine glasses in our hands. It was a great party - Lovely ambience, yummy food (including a chocolate fountain, and of course, the tiramisu!), great company and of course a well-deserved birthday boy. Nick totally deserved the party - he's been a great friend and is forever being gentlemanly and generous. :)

Because of Chopra's 107 class today, I know everything there is need to know about the Oscars that was held last night. Read it, wrote a radio broadcast on it and heard it being read out four times.

So congratulations, Lee Ang.

Marketing was a total rage-building up session as usual. The stupid lecturer cannot stop offering points to people who answer questions - I mean, that's just dumb because it defeats the purpose of why the students start to sound as enthusiastic as they've ever been in their lives. There are these obvious lamebrains who do not say a word in class before, who now speak up, offering less than brilliant answers just so they can get a 'tick' right next to their name. Indeed, Arthur Soh gets his interactive class, but at the expense of incredulity at the CS table. A little-too-loud disgruntled sounds from Jan and eye-rolls from Fel. And much bitching.

Marketing is a bitch. Twenty pages of the non-assessed case analysis and just a few red marks with useless comments. Other than that, I might as well have not handed up the paper.

Feeling rather demoralised and disillusioned about alot of things. Cannot wait for Hong Kong; it's my only aim and goal in life at this point. Shu totally laughed at me on Sunday night when I pinned up our travel plans on our notice board and when I said that we should "get our priorities straight" when referring to the holiday. She made us film the whole scene all over again on my digital camera. Hahaha. But it really is what I'm working towards to now, all the projects and crap I'm getting right now - Hong Kong will make up for it.

The fruity deal

So I can't tell a honeydew and a guava apart, but I can tell when someone is wearing a plain Topman shirt without any visible Topman logo.

Jan thinks I'm really weird.

It's still head knowledge and I should be given credit for that. Haha.

Instead of being seen as the fruit loser, why can't I be seen as the perceptive fashion guru? Come on, I don't have to know my fruits to get somewhere in life, unless I'm going to be a fruitseller or a nutritionist.

A presentation to go, then I'll be HOME for the weekend. Finally.

My Aidan

I'm really tired. I'm burning out, and it's only Tuesday night. The lack of sleep is getting to me and I feel kind of helpless because it's not that I don't want to sleep, but because I have so much to do that I can't afford the time to sleep. I got 11 hours of sleep in the last three nights, which averages out to barely four hours of sleep each night. And I've got two deadlines this Friday, and they're barely even half done. But I'm glad I'm home tonight, though. I don't think I could have survived the whole week in that slave school without coming home to be pampered and loved a little.

Sometimes, I wonder why mass comm students work so hard. I was talking to Denise online, and it hit me when we were talking about school that I have twenty-two and a half hours of lessons each week. Denise only has twelve hours, which is about half of what I have. And Cheryl has thirteen hours, and she's in law, which - what the hell - is a more recognised and prestigious degree than mine and here I am working my ass off. The pain would be alleviated if breaks were really breaks, but no, breaks are when project meetings are being held and work is rushing to be completed.

I'm so tired.

But hall life has sprung a new surprise on me! Shuhui and I bumped into the cutest guy while in the elevator today. He's this white guy who looks like Sex and the City's Aidan Shaw! AHHH. Really super cute - the build, the hair, the smile - suddenly I was a breathless Carrie Bradshaw. Okay, that's abit of an exaggeration but he's HOT. He was about to walk out of the elevator on the 3rd floor where Shu and I got on, but when he saw us and realised it was the 3rd floor, he said, "Oh, you must be tricking me." And then he said hi and smiled adorably when we got into the elevator - and of course he smiled again and said bye when he got off at the 4th floor! Shu and I couldn't stop talking about him once we got back to the room. Going back to my room in hall is now going to be an exciting journey indeed, lest I bump into him. I shall make frequent trips to the kitchenette on the 4th floor from now on, cos that's where he stays. Haha.

But Shuhui and I both agreed though - in any circumstance, if caught in between, it's always best friends over guys.
